Boston, Mass. – The Pioneers celebrated one podium finish and a school record made on day one of competition at the 2019 NCAA DIII Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Noah Steiner took home third place in the men's high jump. Steiner cleared 2.09m (6-10.25) to become an All-American as well as break the UW-Platteville school record. The previous record of 2.08m (6-9.75) was held by five individuals; Jason Denn (1991), John Schmidt (1996), Mike Gratz (2001), Ace McCarty (2012), and Noah Steiner (2018).
Cody Faust began competition in the heptathlon. In the 60m dash, Faust tied his personal best time of 7.26 seconds. Next, in the long jump he jumped 6.78m (22-3). In shot put, the third of seven events, Faust threw 11.54m (37-10.5). To end day one, Faust cleared 1.80m (5-10.75) in the high jump. Faust currently sits in fourth place with 2,760 points.
In the preliminaries of the men's 60m hurdles, junior Charlie Gifford ran 8.18 seconds and qualified to finals. Gifford currently has the sixth best time going into the final heat to be contested Saturday.
In the mile run, seniors Nolan Wallenkamp and Zach Lee qualified to the finals, running 4:09.96 and 4:12.87 respectively in the preliminaries.
Brittany Ehlen competed in the women's pole vault. Ehlen cleared 3.45m (11-3.75).
Alec Burcham ran 48.89 seconds in the men's 400m preliminaries, placing tenth at the national championships. Also placing tenth, Johanna Meister ran 2:14.89 in the women's 800m run.
Burcham, along with Matt Hokanson, Paul Rapp, and Kyle Buechner, ran 3:20.73 in the men's 4x400m preliminary heats. The men's distance medley relay of Logan Steinhoff, Zach Frei, Wallenkamp, and Lee ran 10:19.85.
The Pioneers will return to the Reggie Lewis Center to begin day two of the championships at 10am Saturday, March 9. Faust will conclude the heptathlon, Rachel Beuthin and Brianna Hall will compete in the shot put, and the finals of the men's mile and 60m hurdles will wrap up the Pioneers' showing at the 2019 NCAA DIII Indoor Track and Field Championships.
