Platteville, Wis. – The Pioneer track and field program will host the annual Alumni-Intrasquad Meet on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018. The event brings together alumni of the program to compete against the men and women trying out for the current Pioneer track and field team.
Each year the event draws alumni from throughout the years of UW-Platteville track and field, creating a fun environment for everyone. For the current student-athletes, the event serves as their first chance to compete after preseason training.
In conjunction with the Alumni-Intrasquad Meet, this year's event will also include an outdoor 5,000m run and 2,000m walk in memory of Katie Binning, a former student-athlete of the program. The Katie Binning Memorial Run/Walk will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1.
Binning was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, earning a bachelor's degree in fine arts. She had an incredibly bright future, being involved in track and field, cross country, and art-related clubs while a student-athlete at UW-Platteville. Binning had hopes to teach and inspire others to follow the passion she displayed in art.
On May 30, 2012, Katie Binning passed away in a tragic car accident on her way to teach in the Mazomanie School District. Since then, the family has established the Katie Binning Memorial Scholarship to honor her and continue her legacy.
The contributions from the Katie Binning Memorial Run will be directed to the Katie Binning Memorial Scholarship. Students who receive the scholarship are incoming freshmen pursuing a degree in English or art, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or greater, and reside in the counties surround Katie Binning's hometown of Abbotsford, Wis.
All participants of the Alumni-Intrasquad Meet are urged to sign-up for events via the online sign-up form. Katie Binning Memorial Run participants and donors are encouraged to use the online registration form to register for the event or make a donation to the Katie Binning Memorial Scholarship.
