Early goals secure win in season opener

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneers hit the ground rolling and dominated the first 17 minutes of play to top Central College 3-0 on Friday, Aug. 31 in Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.

Both teams entered the game with a clean slate and UW-Platteville walked away with the 1-0-0 record and handed the Central College Dutch their first loss of the year.

Just 00:48 into the game, senior Tommy Bitter was able to capitalize on a precise corner kick set-up from teammate Nick Hoklas to put the Pioneers on top 1-0 early in the game.

Senior team captain and striker Logan Rinderknecht then dribbled up the middle at the 05:06 mark and found net in order to celebrate the his first goal of the 2018 season.

Only 12 minutes later, and once again up the middle, Rindercknect shoots and scores with a pass from teammate Tyler Gilmore to earn his second goal of the season and leave the Pioneers up 3-0.

The Pioneers' early lead proved to be enough to secure the win throughout the quiet second half.

The Pioneers fired off nine shots on goal compared to Central's four and totaled 15 shots for the day.

Junior Pioneer goal keeper Nate Miller took the win with four saves while Central's Sal Salado-Herrera (0-1-0) was handed  the loss.

The Pioneers return to play Sunday, Sept. 2 at 1 p.m. against Augsburg University in Ralph E. Davis Pioneers Stadium.
